2011 Year in review meme

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
- I spent time at a drilling rig. It was a small rig, but it was still definitely a new experience for me.
- There were also a lot of other firsts involved with the Bighorn Basin Coring project, like being part of a planning meeting for a project of that type.
- Learned how to use a sword! Dan dao!
- I joined a writer's workshop.
- Used the NHS in the UK

2. Did you meet any of your important goals this year? What are your goals for next year?
I only met one of my goals from last year, and it's one that's still in progress - I've kept up with my weight loss fairly well. Major accomplishments for this year that I didn't have as goals were getting an internship for summer 2012 and writing another novel.

For next year:
- Write thesis and graduate
- Get a job
- Finish editing Fire in the Belly and fine an agent
- Get Throne of Nightmares on the road to being published
- Submit to every quarter of Writers of the Future
- Continue to lose weight, keep up the exercising!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Angie did if I remember the timing right.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Thankfully no.

5. What countries did you visit?
The UK, as normal.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
An MS in Geology. A full-time job lined up. Financial security. An agent.

7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I actually can't think of any. I guess this means that nothing really remarkably good or remarkably bad happened in my life this year. Which is okay with me.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Probably the internship with ExxonMobil, though I don't know how much of an achievement that is. I think I got it more because the chief of research is interested in what Mary and I are doing. I feel fairly accomplished about my independent study I did this semester. I've never done one of those, and I had to create a catalog of features and then do a bunch of comparisons of slides. It was really intimidating when it came to writing the report, but I got an A on it so I think I did all right. Other than that, I feel like my biggest achievement was writing the first draft of Fire in the Belly since I haven't written anything novel-sized since Throne of Nightmares, which was my last NaNo over five years go.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I feel like I've failed pretty hardcore when it's come to my writing goals. I sold only one story this year and I've had no success at all when it comes to my novel. I know that's how the business tends to go, but it doesn't make it feel like any less of a failure.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I managed to bork my shoulder pretty badly in November, and I'm still not sure how. As of this moment it's not entirely recovered, though I'm hoping that it's progressing toward a full recovery.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I'm really happy with my new iPod, though it would have been better had I not needed to buy it. The new car was also a good purchase, but something that would have been nice to not have to spend the money on.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Mike as always for putting up with me. Kat for listening to me whine all the time about writing stuff. Isaac for being such a good beta reader and excellent friend. Rynn for dragging me back into RP.

In the realm of people I don't personally know, I'll admit I kind of fell in love with Senator Bernie Sanders this year. Because he's awesome.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I want to slap the shit out of pretty much every single one of the Republicans in the House and Senate. I'm so angry and depressed about the police brutality that's been directed at the various Occupy protests across the US.

14. Where did most of your money go?
The new car ate up a lot of our savings, and then we still had to borrow money from my parents.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Thor movie. And by extension, so excited for Avengers next year. I've gotten pretty excited about rejoining Damned... it's been a lot of fun so far. I was super excited about the drilling in Wyoming.

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Stereo Hearts by Gym Class Heroes

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder?
About the same

b) thinner or fatter?
Thinner! :D

c) richer or poorer?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I'd written more and studied more. I should have done better in marine geochemistry, and I just lacked focus this semester. I also feel like I should have done more RA work for Mary, but she kept telling me I was doing more than enough so I just have to trust her. I want to be a good grad student.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I wish I'd done a lot less stressing out, but that's not really going to stop until I'm finished with grad school.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent Christmas in the UK as normal. Unfortunately I was sick, so that meant I also spent it sober, which is quite unusual.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
Not really, to my husband's great relief. Though I guess if you go with the super-shallow definition of how one 'falls in love' with a celebrity, I fell in love with Tom Hiddleston. XD I haven't had such a massive crush on a celebrity in years.

22. Read any good books?
Ready Player One was all right. I read The Hunger Games and the rest of that series and thought they were phenomenal. Other than that, I just haven't had a lot of time to read, since I've mostly been having to read a lot of papers.

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Castle is the one I've tried hardest to keep up with, so that probably wins.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Not really.

25. What was the best movie you saw?
Thor. Saw it in the theater five times. Loved it every time. It actually got me to write fanfic again, which I never thought would happen.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Ellen Goulding, who I started listening to because of a fanfic. I really like her stuff.

27. What did you want and get?
A new car. New speakers for the new car.

28. What did you want and not get?
An agent. :(

29. What did you do on your birthday?
Went to the Melting Pot with my husband and my parents and got the most trashed that I've gotten in my entire life. After that, it all gets kind of fuzzy. I know my friend Brandon came over and we watched Tucker and Dale vs. Evil but I don't even really remember that.

30.What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Finding an agent for my novel I think.

31. Who kept you sane?
Mike. Always Mike. And Kat.

32. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Tom Hiddleston. >.>

33. What political issue stirred you the most?

34. Who did you miss?
No one, really. I had a very busy year.

35. Who was the best new person you met?
Rosemary, I think, in Cambridge. She's wonderful.

36. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
Just go for it. I did some crazy stuff, particularly in kung fu, and it was all about just going for it and not thinking about how much it hurts if you fail. And everything else I've been trying to do has been a lot like that.

37. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Fear is like a fake friend
It warms you up and takes you in
You mouth the words but no sound comes out
