Just Who Do You Think You Are?

So my "who am I" post is now another three years out of date. I just figured I'd make a new one. Nothing to see here, move along.

Because it's way more fun than reading papers. THERE I SAID IT.

There are a few things that are probably important and useful to know about me. And a lot more things that are just random because I felt like writing them down.

- I'm currently 30, but we'll call my age 30-ish so that this entry will last for a bit longer. I'm now a grad student at the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. So I'm still on average older than the other grad students, but only by three or four years for the most part. This has the effect of making me feel less ancient than I did when I was an undergrad. Wahoo. I'm currently pursuing a Masters degree, which involves paleoclimate research in the Bighorn Basin, using fossilized soils. Which are awesome.

- I didn't actually get my undergrad degree until I was 29. This means I have a bizarre and checkered work history to fill up the stretch of time between graduating high school and going back to college. I worked for a telephone company for several years, then got laid off. I volunteered as an EMT during that time as well. I've also worked in petroleum. It's safe to say I've got a reasonable acquaintance with corporate America. And what drunk guys smell like after they've been knifed by other drunk guys who may or may not have been high on meth at the time.

- I'm a nerd. While my degree is in geology, I love all things science, even if I'm somewhat mystified by the details and quirks of the other sciences at times. I'm one of those creepy people that thinks math is fun, beautiful, and even a little sexy. I wax poetic about rocks. If it didn't make me so darn happy, I'd probably be seeking professional help. My biggest nerd crush, since he pops up rather often so I might as well warn you now, is Phil Plait, the Bad Astronomer.

- When I was an undergrad, I got my second major in Japanese Language and Culture. The language half has now gotten pretty rusty, but don't count me out completely. I try not to be the humorless curmudgeon that crushes the innocent fun of young weeaboos, but... you know. Sometimes fun crushing is the only joy I have in life. And I revel in it. Just ask any undergrad that's ever had the misfortune to be trapped in a lab section of mine.

- I'm a huge geek. I roleplay, and I love my video games, manga, and and genre fiction. I play Warcrack (my server is Perenolde - and by the way, GLORY TO THE HORDE!). I have had deep discussions about the philosophical underpinnings of movies like Thor, and for the most part these discussions have occurred while sober.

- I write, therefore I am. During the school year I average 500-1000 words per day; if I go a day without writing anything, I start getting a little weird. It's just a thing I have to do.

- I have also published, though if I tried to hinge my existence on that, I'd probably fade away to nothing within a couple of weeks. If you're curious about the bits here and there I've published, I've got the short list on the front page of my website.

- I have two cats, named Loki and Tengu. They are, collectively, my furry little bastards. Loki is the evil kitty. Tengu is the kitty that pretends to be nice, but actually makes a mess and successfully blames it on Loki because he knows we buy the "I'm cute and innocent" act. To date, Loki has destroyed a bottle of rum, a plate, a glass, a hand-made bowl, and the upstairs toilet. (He also likes pulling sweaters off chair backs and clothing off the drying rack so that he can take a nap in the resulting nest and shed multicolored hair all over it.) Tengu is lagging sadly behind in the race, but he's making inroads on my collection of wedding present towels, which shows real dedication and effort on his part.

- I have a long-suffering and adorable husband named Mike, who is either British or American depending on which is more convenient for him at the time. Though he always keeps the sexy, sexy accent. We live together in the teeny townhouse that I've owned since I worked for AT&T. So I've successfully survived having a mortgage for more than ten years now, which I guess makes me something approaching a responsible adult.

- I collect plastic food. And miniature plastic food. This is probably a much more healthy collection than my rejection letter collection, which has now grown so large I'm going to have to start a new bulldog clip soon.

- Speaking of food, my favorites are sushi, katsudon, Thai curry, and crispy chicken like they serve it at the Empress, which is a dim sum place in Denver. And the best dessert of all time is, in my opinion, pineapple upside-down cake. I wish I could cook, but I'm not very good of it and can make a grand total of maybe six dishes. But I make the most bitchin' gyoza in the world.

- Oh, and I'm a liberal feminist skeptic who likes to rant about the injustices of the world. Though I don't rant as much as I used to because I've found that if I spend too much time being angry, I start grinding my teeth while I'm awake. And that's a bad sign. If you want to contribute to me causing another of my fillings to spontaneously pop out, just bring up climate change denial, or abortion rights, or social justice and stand back.

- Fandom stuff: Sailor Moon was my gateway drug. I wrote Gundam Wing almost exclusively for several years, then moved over to Bleach for a while because Renji/Rukia is my OTP. (The first OTP I've ever had in my life.) Everything I've written, fanfic-wise, is collected on my website or my writing journal. (katsudon.net or katsu_fic for the more recent stuff.) The layout it awful. Please pity me because I am a writer, not an artist, and I wouldn't know layout if someone bludgeoned me to death with it. I'm mostly done with writing fanfiction now, though I did do some bits for the Thor movie because I adore Tom Hiddleston's Loki so much.

- My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, William Gibson, Terry Pratchett, and Murakami Haruki. I also just adore Wil Wheaton and have enjoyed watching him grow as a blogger and author.

- I'm a complete wuss about horror. I can't read most horror novels because they're too scary, and the way I play horror games is sitting behind my best friend Kat as she plays. So that I can randomly scream when something innocuous happens in the game and scare the crap out of her. Then I offer helpful advice like, "Kill it! Kill it! Kill it! Why aren't you killing it?"

- I'm a nut about kung fu. Total, I've been practicing Hung Mei style kung fu for eight years (holy shit!), though I had to take a two year break in the middle because I was having severe knee problems. I like punching things. It's good for anger management. And this last year I've learned nine ring broadsword, which I'm unspeakably excited about.

- I have a hat. It's made of kangaroo leather so that it can be crushed completely without damaging it. My current hat is actually Hat Mark II, which is a nice hat, but not as good as the sorely missed Hat Mark I, which is the hat everyone was used to seeing me in at conventions. I mention this because first, I have a bizarre, perhaps unnaturally close relationship with my hat (I am really just a life support system for it, I think) and it's the easiest way to pick me out of a crowd. Bright red hair and The Hat.

I think that is all the important stuff about the beast known as Katsu. If you have anything to add, complimentary or not, please say so in comments.

Haha, wow... I haven't even read my old GW stuff in years. Mostly because then the guilt of my unfinished story would rise up and gnaw on my head. >.> I'm glad that it's still holding up. ;)

Hi! I've been a longtime fan of your GW fanfic, but after all these years, I finally mustered up the courage to actually tell you so. I read a little bit of your original work and enjoyed that too, but I shamelessly just read and go, since I never really know what comment to leave other than I really liked it (and it just sounds lame after reading other people's awesome comments). :(

Okay, I guess that's about it. I figured I should say hi at some point so I won't seem like a total creeper following your blog...

Aw. <3 Thank you! I'm glad that you've enjoyed my writing. The feeding of my ravenous ego isn't necessary, but I do appreciate it. :D

Speaking of horror games, the new Silent Hill comes out next month. We should play it.

I wasn't sure exactly where to say this, but I was led here by your Thor fic, well specifically "The Calculator".

Usually I'm not the type for long fic (because I have the attention span of a very young child) but your story kept me glued to my screen for several hours into the early morning hours and when I came to the end I was desperately wishing it wasn't over. It was absolutely amazing. Your writing style is kind of brilliant. You wrote the characters so well and even though they are established characters of someone else's already with years of canon, I feel like you managed to flesh them out even further and heck, give them your own spin. The writing was witty and definitely funny and kept me entertained the entire time. I was surprised actually to find this quality of writing on the meme and thought you must've been an established published writer. You have this really amazing way of combining humour and strong emotions throughout your writing and just, yes. So much yes.

I was extremely pleased you decided to de-anon and when I came to your journal, lo and behold, you were the anon who had written all of my other favourite fills on the meme as well! My only disappointment, in fact, was that I had read all your fills already!

That aside, I haven't had the pleasure of reading your original fiction yet and will definitely dive right into that asap. And I wanted to thank you for writing that fic and sharing your talent with the fandom for a bit and thank you for depriving me of sleep! (in a good way) Also it seems like you're in the midst of trying to find a publisher for your book, so here's wishing you luck and hoping that the next time I embarrassingly fangirl all over your livejournal, it'll be over your new book!

Aw, I'm glad that you liked the story! It definitely wasn't my typical writing style... I was stealing pretty blatantly from Terry Pratchett, I think. (And if you haven't read Terry Pratchett, DO EET.) And glad you liked the other two fills as well! I don't write much fanfic these days, but Thor really inspired me. Or rather, Loki did. >.>

Thank you! :)
