What a "fun" week it's been

This has been the most pathetically wasted week of my life, I think. Starting on Tuesday evening, I was sick. But it wasn't a sick that even made any sense. There wasn't anything wrong with my stomach, I didn't have a runny nose or a cough, I just had a fever and all the symptoms that go with it (chills, generalized aches, loss of appetite, fatigue) and a headache. For days. And days. Just to be able to function, I had to constantly take ibuprofen. So that was fun. And it went on and on, thought at least on Friday I was starting to feel better and had hopes that I'd be able to actually get things accomplished over the weekend, like going down to Colorado Springs.

Then yesterday morning, I woke up with a massive case of hives. Seriously massive. All over my arms, down my chest and stomach, and all over my thighs. Plus my eyes were swelling shut. So THAT was fun. I didn't have any benadryl in the house, plus I admit that I freaked out just a little because my eyes were swelling shut so I woke up Mike and made him take me to the ER.

The nice people at the ER treated me very well, though no one could figure out what I might be having an allergic reaction to, since I came in to contact with absolutely nothing new and different on Friday night. So they gave me an IV and pushed some steroids and bendaryl and sent me on my way. I spent the rest of the day swinging between knocked out and loopy since I had to take an additional three 50 mg doses of benadryl to get the hives to go fully away. Also, apparently I'm a rare and special sort of person that gets a horrible aftertaste in the back of their throat when they get put on IV saline. Fun. It was like licking a vinyl glove that had been sprinkled with salt.

This morning, I woke up with hives again, though they were just getting started up on my left arm. (I think with the timing of it, the benadryl had only worn off for an hour or so by then.) So I'm now taking yet more happy pills and trying desperately to figure out what might be setting me off. So far, the best I've got is that on Friday night, I ate a couple of clementines and a chocolate peanut butter egg for dinner (healthy, I know) then went to bed. Well, last night I didn't have any citrus or peanut butter, so I think that eliminates those two things. I did have something chocolatey, but I hope to god it's not that. The only other things I can really think of is that it's the cats (please, no) or maybe my sheets, since I washed those on Friday and used a dryer sheet instead of liquid fabric softener like we've been doing for months. So I'm washing the sheets again with liquid fabric softener and I guess I'll see.

I figure if I have hives again tomorrow morning, I'd better just call my regular doctor and see what she thinks I should do. I guess the good news is that at least I don't feel sick any more. Just loopy and itchy and like I want to lay down all the time, thanks to the benadryl.

How well did you wash your clementines before eating them? I know you don't eat the peel, but if it's not the dryer sheet, it could have been a mold on the clementines that managed to get on the part you eat since there is always some small amount of the rind on the fleshy juicy bits. I can't remember if you are allergic to penicillin, or not, but if you are, it could be another mold that loves to breed on citrusy stuff.

Take care, hon. It's probably not the cats.

I'm wondering if there could be something in your clothes or your sheets? Were they recently washed in something possibly different? Or if not, could something have gotten on them? My thought would be to strip your bed and wash your sheets really well in a natural (as in no dyes or perfumes) detergent.

I hope you start to feel better.

Every once in a while, this kind of thing seems to happen for no reason at all that anyone can figure out. I mean, if you can figure it out, great (and in the unlikely event that it's the cats, there are allergy shots) but it may always be a mystery. I had a similar episode a few years ago, never figured out why, and it hasn't happened again.

In the meantime, rest and heal.

Saw my GP this morning... she thinks it might be just another thing to do with the weird virus I had last week. It's as good as the next theory, to be sure.

Good grief! Allergies can be scary. You know, since Spring has sprung and the pollen counts are skyrocketing, it could be something in the air. What really sucks is that it apparently has come out of nowhere, which means that it could be something that you weren't allergic to before, but your body just decided not to take it any more. If you can go to an allergist and get a skin test, that could tell you exactly what you're allergic to, and what to avoid. Morganne is allergic to practically everything on the planet and will break out in hives at the slightest provocation, so you have my deepest empathy.

I'm starting to think a skin test might be a good idea. My GP mentioned it too... unfortunately, this round of hives needs to go away first. I wish it would.

bad news bb. 67% of the times we never figure out what causes hives. Also even old things can set your body off in a new way. for example, citrus cross reacts with grasses...anyway, it will prob take a few days for things to settle down. it tends to come and go in waves until the offending substance works it's way out. Feel better soon. You can take zyrtec BID too. that helps with hives. You are prob on'roid? Poor Rach...

Yeah, they've got me on prednisone. I saw my GP this morning and she's having me take pepcid to go with the benadryl as well. I hope this goes away soon. There's no way I can make it to work and be remotely useful in my current state. I'm itchy, loopy, and just want to sleep all the time.
