I don't really do funny.

So I finished my ridiculously huge fanfic (it ended up being around 40K words, so... not the longest thing I've written this year, but respectable) and I think I managed to keep it funny. Which I was thinking is unusual for me... because I just really don't do funny.

I wish I did. I love funny things. Particularly funny the way Terry Pratchett does it, where it's hilarious but has so much emotion and heart in it that I often come out of his stories feeling like I've been punched in the gut. But other than this one fic, I just haven't really ever done funny. I've attempted clever before, and it was just godawful. Then again, I don't know if I've ever read a story that was clever that I've really liked. I want funny, and I want some tragedy in it too, because one without the other just seems weak.

I think my problem is that funny (at least the way I like it) requires a world that's fundamentally ludicrous, but in a way that everyone in the world can still take seriously. And when I world build, I just can't seem to do that.

It's something to think about. Because if I don't really write funny, that makes it a challenge. And I like challenges. I guess I'll let that just percolate in the back of my head until I find a story I want to write.

I haven't received a short story rejection in nearly a month. I'm starting to feel kind of weird and anxious about it. Particularly since without getting a rejection back soon, I'm going to have to completely pull something out of my ass for this quarter of Writers of the Future. :X

I finished up another litholog today, from the drill site logs that we did. It's not exactly the most precise work, since I'm trying to reconcile what the drillers claim the depth is and what we measured, which barely ever agrees. But it'll be something to look at until we get to the actual cores in January. Four more logs to go!

I even got the work done early this afternoon, which meant I got to go home and... do my geochem homework. The good news is that the homework is now 3/4 done, and for the final question I'm waiting for some clarification from my teacher. Because either I'm seriously misreading things or I'm going to end up with a denominator of zero, and then I'm just going to rip a hole in the fabric of space and time. So I won't have to worry about it this weekend. Instead I'll be trying to finish up all of my papers about evaporites, just to get them out of the way. Boo.

Well, I'm not really counting the giant fanfic, because that was really a departure from what I normally write. And crazy fun. ^_^ Makes me want to write more funny...
